Meditation is a type of discipline that produces deep relaxation and mental awareness that is practiced in some religions, exercises, and counseling sessions to reduce stress. The practice can produce mental and muscle relaxation while leading the person to inner peace. Creating a calm, safe place or a sanctuary for this practice aids in revitalizing the body and mind.
A space for reflection and meditation can be different for each person, as everyone has different stresses, beliefs, and obligations. Freeing the area or room of all clutter is a place to start, and adding objects that stir all of the 5 senses is a good idea as well. Put in a comfortable chair or cushion positioned by a window, add a live plant, candles, books, and soft calming music. A sanctuary should be welcoming and inspirational. All of the objects, colors, sounds, and smells should be spirit-lifting and nurturing. The room or space is for healing, and it is a personal place for those private moments to recharge all of the senses and bring calmness and peace. When new pictures or objects are found that stir the soul, add them to the space.
Many people need to touch objects that are included in their sanctuary that connects them to the meaning of it, or even holding stones or serenity beads during meditation to focus energy on. Whatever has that special meaning that helps with serenity and wellness in the soul should be included in the space. Everyone should have a sanctuary to reflect, pray, meditate, or read that heals and feeds the mind, body, and soul.
