Universal law is a set of absolute principles that govern human behavior. It is law that can be understood from the nature of human beings and the human condition. It is law that does not belong to any particular philosophy or religion, but may be found to be part of all philosophies and all religions. An example of a universal law is the Golden Rule, that you should treat others as you would yourself like to be treated. It is a rule that does not have to be proved through reason, but on the contrary is something that all people feel to be right.
Central to universal law is the idea known as karma. Karma is simply the idea of cause and effect: the experiences of a person, past, present and future, and a result of that person’s actions, past, present, and future, even though a direct causality may not be apparent. The idea of karma appears in many different traditions, in different variations and under different names, but the idea is always the same. It is expressed in Christianity by the idea that you reap what you sow.
Universal law is not found through reason, but through intuition. Our intuition tells us what rules of behavior are necessary and universal for all human beings. This intuition is not to be discovered by rational thought, but by prayer or meditation. One way to define meditation is that it is a way of turning off of the rational mind and allowing the intuitive, irrational mind to discover itself. It is through this self-discovery that universal truths are to be discovered.
